Ah, a fragment of the illustrious "Apocalypse Tapestry." This splendid medieval series was commissioned by none other than Louis I, Duke of Anjou, in the waning years of the 14th century, precisely between 1377 and 1382. It vividly brings to life the scenes from the Book of Revelation, capturing the dramatic and cataclysmic visions beheld by St. John.
The tapestry's style and iconography unmistakably echo those of the Apocalypse series, especially with the depiction of a horseman, one of the formidable Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The scales he brandishes suggest he is the third horseman, symbolizing Famine. The series is celebrated for its vibrant and dramatic portrayals of biblical events, rendered in a palette of rich colors and intricate details.
Currently, the Apocalypse Tapestry finds its home at the Château d'Angers in France. Originally, it consisted of 90 scenes spread across six massive sections, each an impressive 78 feet wide and 20 feet high. Alas, only 71 scenes have withstood the ravages of time. Nevertheless, the tapestry endures as a remarkable testament to medieval artistry, showcasing the era’s exceptional craftsmanship and the profound thematic resonance of biblical narratives.
